What Does it Mean to be
"Born Again?"

Born again, does that sound strange to you?
Have you ever wondered what it means to be born again?

In the Bible a man named Nicodemus approached Jesus, he was curious about Jesus and the kingdom of God. Jesus told him, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3). Nicodemus must have thought being born again sounded strange, this was his response, "How can a man be born when he is old?" (John 3:4).

Nicodemus was a moral man, he obeyed the law of God, and was a respected leader of the Jewish community. No doubt he was a fine man, yet something was missing. Many people today, like Nicodemus, confuse religion with new birth in Christ. Phrases like "I pray regularly", "I'm a good person", "I go to church", or "I believe there is a God" often are confused with a real new birth experience.

New birth begins with the conviction of the Holy Spirit, a person must first realize he is a sinner in need of a Savior. You see, because of sin we are spiritually dead. Since we are dead a spiritual birth, as Jesus described it, is necessary.

The Bible says all persons are guilty of sin (Rom 3:23). Jesus came into this world and gave His life on a cross to save sinners. To be born again means that a person repents of sin, trusts Christ as Savior, and professes faith in Christ.

Jesus told Nicodemus that everyone who believes in (places faith in) Christ would not perish (John 3:16). Jesus is the only one who can save us (John 14:6).

If you believe in Jesus, repent of your sin, and trust Christ as your Savior you can experience the new birth. Yes, you can be born again. To believe in Jesus is to be born again. If you are a sinner in need of a Savior, God has provided a way for you, confess your sins, ask Jesus to save you and He will.

The Bible says "Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Acts 2:21). If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior ask a Christian friend to help you grow in the decision you've just made.
